Marina di Carrara, Italy
The modern seaside resort of Marina di Carrara sits on Italy's Tyrrhenian coastline. The resort is bordered by a long sandy beach with the sea in the foreground and green pine forests in the background; the distant dramatic white Apuan Alps are the source of the purest marble - famously used in Rome's Pantheon and Trajan's Column and also Michelangelo's David. The 'Marble City' of Carrara is a 20-minute drive inland with marble everywhere you look; from the pavements and fountains to the sculptures and main cathedral - walk through Piazza Alberica and stop for a coffee to people-watch. Marina di Carrara is also gateway to Florence's Duomo, Uffizi Palace and Gallery, and Ponte Vecchio and also Pisa's famous Leaning Tower, Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the Baptistery, and Miracle Square.

The capital of Italy, Rome, is a sprawling city cosmopolitan city brimming with globally-influential art, architecture, and culture. The three-tiered Roman Colosseum amphitheatre offers fascinating tours of ancient history. The late Renaissance St Peter's Basilica was crafted by Michelangelo and other architects and is a must-see. The crystal blue waters and sculptures of Trevi Fountain will leave you mesmerised. The Roman Forum is the excavated heart of the Roman Empire and provides an insight of age-old times. Vatican Museums are home to Renaissance art treasures and feature the Sistine Chapel frescoes. Take a walk down the famous Spanish Steps. Chania, Crete
Chania is a thriving city with beautiful Venetian buildings. Located on the north coast of Crete, the city is picturesque and it main attractions are situated close to the harbour. Explore the waterfront and stroll along the harbour wall to be greeted by the iconic Venetian Lighthouse. Discover the ancient buildings and admire the Venetian and Turkish architecture. Take a walk down the narrow shopping streets to soak up the local culture, or dine in one of the many waterfront restaurants and cafes to taste the flavours of the local cuisine. Head to the Naval Museum where you can gain insight into Crete's maritime history.

Mykonos, Greece
Mykonos sits in the Aegean Sea with traditional white-washed houses and bright-blue waters. Wander the twisting narrow lanes, which were originally designed to confuse pirate invaders, and discover quaint shops and boutiques. Visit stylish beach bars, modern restaurants and see the iconic 16th-century Venetian windmills which overlook Mykonos town — the island's capital.

Athens, Greece
Athens — Greece's capital city — was the birthplace of democracy and western civilisation. The city features numerous 5th-century landmarks including the former temple of Parthenon and the Acropolis, an ancient citadel that sits on a hilltop overlooking the Plaka district. The historic Plaka neighbourhood is one of the oldest in the world and features winding streets lined with family-run bars and restaurants.

Kusadasi, Turkey
The Turkish port of Kusadasi is today's port of call. Enjoy a morning's shopping around Kusadasi's lively bazaars or spend a few hours sunbathing on the nearby Long and Ladies Beaches. A trip to Ephesus is a must for culture fans - home to the Temple of Artemis (one of the Seven Wonders of the World) and Library of Celsus. Make for the hills of Selcuk to admire the House of the Virgin Mary and taste local fruit-based wines in Sirince.

Pay a visit to the cave houses at the beautiful village of Oia before heading down the steps to Amoudi Bay to feast on fresh seafood. Taste the unique beers at the Donkey Brewery close to the black pebbled sands of Kamari Beach. Explore the island's history at the Akrotiri archaeological site or admire the dramatic coastline by catamaran.
