3
Hamburg, Germany
Germany's largest port and second-biggest city is found on the River Elbe in the north of the country. Hamburg has been an integral part of German trade since the Middle Ages and its strong maritime history can be seen throughout its culture, atmosphere and UNESCO-listed architecture today. Stroll through the legendary Fish Market, take a scenic barge tour, or visit one of many museum ships to learn more about Hamburg's seafaring past. Tower over Hamburg Airport and the Alps at the home of the largest model railway in the world — Miniatur Wunderland — or start at the Jungfernstieg in the city centre to find shops, cafes and multicultural restaurants.
4
Esbjerg, Denmark
The town of Esbjerg sits on the west coast of the Jutland peninsula in southwest Denmark. The unique Man Meets the Sea figures greet you at the harbour entrance. Get up close to the marine life at the Fisheries and Maritime Museum, or go on a seal safari in the neighbouring Wadden Sea National Park. Discover over seventy shops and restaurants and also a cinema in the new Broen Shopping Centre. Admire the exhibits at Esbjerg Art Museum, explore Viking history at Ribe Viking Museum, or pay a visit to the Water Tower and nearby Kunstmuseum. Enjoy a 12-minute ferry ride over to the tranquil island of Fano for beautiful beaches, nature walks, and great places to eat.
5
Emden, Germany
Emden is an independent city and seaport in Lower Saxony and sits at the mouth of the River Ems in northwest of Germany. A naturally formed lake, Großes Meer is ideal for those who enjoy hiking or would like to try out windsurfing. See a bounty of paintings by Edvard Munch, Picasso, and Franz Marc at Kunsthalle Emden. The Bunkermuseum and Museum Feuerschiff Ambrumbank are worthwhile visits if you're a fan of history and culture. Take a pedal boat ride through the city's canals or hop on a boat tour from the harbour to discover Borkum, the largest of the German islands, or Delfziji in the Netherlands.
6
Heligoland, Germany
Referred to as Germany's only high seas island, due to its significant distance from the mainland, Heligoland is well-connected by boat to Busum, Cuxhaven, Bremerhaven, and Hamburg. World-famous lobster and the Knieper can be found on the island, as well as intelligent seals basking on the sand. Visit Lummenfelsen, the world's smallest wild preserve, and the iconic aquarium of Heligoland. Be sure to take plenty of pictures during your stay on the island; the rugged landscapes make for perfect photo opportunities. Hike the beautiful paths that lead to stunning scenery or visit the outdoor swimming bath for a dip. Shop for a range of gifts including Scotch malt whiskeys and electronics at unbeatable prices.
