Staff Educational: Saga's Spirit of Discovery

Date posted: 05/11/19
Ben, from our Social Media team, struck lucky earlier this month when he was selected to go on our latest Educational on board Britain’s newest cruise ship Spirit of Discovery. Saga’s latest cruise ship is solely built for the British market and feature design cues, cuisine and levels of service you would only expect from the world’s finest boutique hotels! Not sold yet?

Wake up every day to a new, idyllic location on your very own balcony… Yes, every guest aboard receives a balcony.

With Saga’s infamous personal service, inclusive value and the added extra of seeing music legend Jools Holland in the Spirit of Discovery’s exciting new venue we don’t know what other reason you need not to be calling our cruise experts right now? If you still need some persuading take a look below at Ben’s two-day experience of his very first cruise experience on board this spectacular ship!

“This was my first cruising experience and The Spirit of Discovery is such a beautiful ship it was the perfect introduction to the world of cruising.

“Upon our arrival in Dover, we were assigned our cabins for the two nights before being greeted in reception with a complimentary glass of champagne and to read through our itinerary for the next two days. My cabin was located on the 10th deck (B012) and it was amazing! The facilities in the cabin were brilliant and it had a modern look to it. The room included complimentary Wi-Fi, private bathroom, bathrobes, tea and coffee making facilities, and much more. One of my favourite parts of the cabin, apart from the balcony, was the bathroom. It was absolutely stunning and fitted Saga's Boutique Cruising perfectly. Every cabin also has a balcony which is a great selling point!!

“The on board spa was simply beautiful, we didn't get any treats however it would be a perfect setting for a customer to relax in whether it’s the infrared sauna or steam room. You can even book yourself in for a hot stone massage whilst sailing!

"There's also a chance to get your hair cut at the on board hairdressers; so you can ensure your hair will be perfect for your formal night.

“My biggest highlight of the trip was the pool party that was hosted by Fleur East, she also performed a set-up for us on our first day. The overall vibe was amazing, the sun was shining, we got to see the Lido Deck of the ship, and sampled some of the on board wines and spirits.

“Finally… the food! My favourite part about any trip or holiday is sampling all the food that they have to offer and the Spirit of Discovery seriously didn't disappoint. I visited two different restaurants whilst on board, these were 'The Grill' and 'Britannia Lounge'. Both of them served amazing food. 'The Grill' was a buffet restaurant which allowed diners to go and pick what they fancied, this was really good as it caters for all. I went for a sirloin steak, chips, and tomato and pesto pasta - a weird combination but it tasted really nice!

"The desserts were also exceptional from 'The Grill' and my personal favourite was the strawberry cheesecake, it tasted so good.

"We dined in 'Britannia Lounge' on both evenings and it didn't disappoint. Across the two nights I tried scallops for the first time which were delicious. For my main I had a sirloin steak, chips, roasted vegetables, and peppercorn sauce. The second night I had 'Pan Roast Corn Fed Chicken Breast' which came with truffle risotto, green asparagus, tarragon, and red wine reduction - this was my favourite meal of the trip! “
