Split, Croatia

Split, on Croatia's Dalmatian Coast, is the country's second-largest city. It is popular for its golden beaches and bustling centre — which was built around the fourth-century Diocletian's Palace. Today, the palace remains a central part of Split's heritage after its transformation into a variety of houses, flats, churches, and chapels. Stroll through the centre to admire the towering Cathedral of Saint Domnius with its 13th-century oak doors that tell the story of Christ. The Riva waterfront promenade runs the length of the old town and is the perfect place to stop for lunch. See cascading waterfalls at Krka National Park or relax and snorkel on the beach of Brac Island before departing.

Heraklion (Crete), Greece

Sitting on Crete's northern coast, the capital city of Heraklion is Greece's fourth-largest city. Located between the districts of Lassithi and Rethymno, Heraklion remains one of the most popular tourist destinations. Discover the Bronze Age ruins at the Palace of Knossos and sail to the deserted island of Dia for a snorkelling trip. Stroll through Agora — the Market Street — for an authentic taste of Crete. Here, you can sample traditional dishes like souvlaki kebabs and sweet baklava pastries.

Mykonos, Greece

Mykonos sits in the Aegean Sea with traditional white-washed houses and bright-blue waters. Wander the twisting narrow lanes, which were originally designed to confuse pirate invaders, and discover quaint shops and boutiques. Visit stylish beach bars, modern restaurants and see the iconic 16th-century Venetian windmills which overlook Mykonos town — the island's capital.

Ephesus (Kusadasi), Turkey

The ancient UNESCO-listed city of Ephesus is located three kilometres from the small town of Selçuk in the Izmir region of Turkey; where the Aegean Sea joins the former estuary of the River Kaystros. Founded in the 10th century BC and important from ancient Greek times; Ephesus served as a crossroads between the East and West for centuries. Today only approximately 20% of the city has been excavated; revealing one of the world’s biggest collections of Roman ruins. Highlights include: Cukurici Mound, Ayasuluk Hill and its Selçuk Fortress, Saint John Basilica, Isa Bey Mosque, Isa Bey Bath, and Temple of Artemis (one of the Seven Wonders of the World); House of the Virgin Mary, and Ephesus Ancient City itself. After visiting Ephesus; why not head to the nearby Ephesus Museum in Selçuk to admire the intricately-carved Artemis statue and the exhibits on display in the Gladiator Room?

Mytilini (Lesbos), Greece

Mytilini is the capital of the Greek Island of Lesbos and sits on its south-eastern coast. Standing proudly on seven green hills; Mytilini boasts a rich history that dates back to 3BC and was the birthplace of lyrical poets like Sappho, Alcaeos, Pittacos, and also Odysseas Elytis, winner of the 1979 Nobel Prize for literature. Mytilini is now home to a plethora of museums and art galleries - Archaeological Museum, Byzantine Museum, Theophilos Gallery, Teriade Collection, Natural History Museum, and The Petrified Forest Museum - and also an ancient theatre in a pine grove to the north of the city. Meander through the charming neighbourhoods, along the Promenade and Hermou street, and past historic mansions from the Ancient Port in Epano Skala to Kioski and Sourada. Admire Metropolis Cathedral and St Therapon domed church; bask in Therma hot springs at the top of the Gulf of Gera; and pay a visit to Tzami Mosque and Mytilini's very own ‘Statue of Liberty’.

Istanbul, Turkey

Straddling Europe and Asia across the Bosphorus Strait, Istanbul is a major Turkish city. Discover that its Old City reflects cultural influences from the many empires that used to rule. Visit one of the most beautiful buildings in the world, Hagia Sophia, and shop 'til you drop in the 5,000 shops covering 60 streets at the Grand Bazaar. The unforgettable views from Galata Tower cannot go a miss, as well as its 9-stories high restaurant and nightclub. Wander the Blue Mosque in the old city and spend time in the beating heart of Istanbul - Istiklal Avenue. The Archaeology Museum is well worth a visit to spot the magnificent sarcophagus of Alexander, blue tiled Karaman Mihrab, and the Treaty of Kadesh - the world's earliest surviving peace treaty.
